Overcoming AL UE with English Builder

"Students’ learning attitude is important. I try to put more effort into encouraging the hardworking students to complete English Builder lessons as they are more willing to learn and can achieve higher."
- Ms Law

"Motivation is more important than punishment for the below-target students. The students see the benefits of using English Builder through sharing ideas with their school mates who have performed well in both English Builder and school tests. The sharing can be an impulsion for students."
- Ms Chiu

A Successful Case

One of Ms Chiu’s S7 students from China Holiness Church Living Spirit College has greatly improved her English by utilising English Builder. She shared with Ms Chiu the secret behind her success. She listened to the audio in English Builder lessons repeatedly to practise listening. The student was overjoyed to get a pass in the A-Level Use of English which very much manifests her improvement.

An All-Rounded Focus of Electives of NSS

Miss Gatchalian also has her own approach to the teaching of the Electives in the NSS. She feels the students should be exposed to more than three Electives. She hopes to cover all electives in the course of three years while focusing on three major ones. The latter would be taught every three years so that students would be refreshed constantly and their knowledge would be deepened with every encounter with the Electives.

Motivating with Recognition – Senior Form Students

Ms Chiu and other teachers would invite senior form students who did well in English Builder and school assessments to share their experiences in front of the class. This gives the outstanding students a sense of achievement and further boosts their incentive to complete EB lessons. The less motivated students would then realise the benefits and importance of using English Builder.

Motivating with Gifts – Junior Form Students

Teachers give out small gifts and candies to recognise students’ good work. Teachers pointed out that the free movie tickets and certificates from Wiseman Education also help motivate students to participate in and finish the English Builder lessons.

Teamwork and Caring

In China Holiness Church Living Spirit College, teachers share their experiences in motivating students with one another. Teachers also work as a team to encourage students to complete their English Builder lessons. The school policy of keeping a student assignment record helps teachers monitor students’ progress.
