Teaching English through Drama


Learning Objectives

  • Review the content and requirements of this NSS elective
  • Review the learning targets of this elective
  • Evaluate a suggested scheme of work for this elective
  • Build appreciation of drama as a language art through reviewing the basic language of drama and authentic drama text types
    e.g. plays, TV scripts, monologues
  • Review drama warm-up games/exercises focusing on articulation
    e.g. pronunciation, intonation, emphasis, pace, pause, pitch, and volume
  • Review techniques for classroom implementation
    e.g. mime, improvisation, role play, & stage performance
  • Review assessment criteria for this NSS elective
  • Facilitate teaching of Learning English through Drama

Workshop Framework

The workshop will illustrate and discuss below:

  • How to use drama to learn English e.g.
    • Using drama to stimulate students in their learning of English
    • Adopting an all-round approach (speaking, role playing, script writing, planning, performing, singing)
    • Allowing whole class participation and help address learning diversity, e.g. give accelerated kids the freedom to improvise and explore the language in a range of contexts
  • How to use drama activities to develop a positive learning environment, and encourage creativity, teamwork, and communication e.g.
    • Using scriptwriting to build imagination and creativity
    • Using scriptwriting to extend critical thinking
  • How to build students’ listening and speaking competence and confidence e.g.
    • Using role play to deepen understanding of social issues through interaction-based listening and speaking
  • How to use classroom/stage performance to encourage review, re-cycling, and consolidation of prior learning
