Teaching English through Short Stories


Learning Objectives

  • Enable teachers to understand the major features of short stories
  • Introduce teachers to methods that motivate students to appreciate short stories
  • Equip teachers with the techniques that allow students to write their own stories
  • Equip teachers with the resources needed to teach the short stories elective
  • Develop students’ performance skills in relation to story-telling

  • Teaching strategies that encourage students to read and write
  • Strategies that show students that reading and writing are two parts of the same process
  • Equip teachers with the ability to develop cultural awareness through literature and critical thinking skills

Activities

  • Review content, requirements, scheme of work and assessment criteria
  • Introduce the major features of short stories
  • Plan a school-based NSS short story curriculum
  • Develop teaching strategies that enhance cultural awareness and creativity, and to address Schools’ specific needs
  • Develop a lesson that practise reading and re-writing short stories
